Mrs. Jessica Berrada began the creation and launch of Commissioned By Christ, Inc. trying to answer the question “What about the rest of us?” As a faithful lay Catholic woman, Jessica felt the strong call to missionary work. She recognized that Catholic priests, consecrated religious brothers and sisters, and Protestant and Evangelical Christians often answered Jesus’ invitation to engage in corporal and spiritual works of mercy through missionary work. However, most Catholics seem to lack the same opportunities to participate in the missionary life of the Catholic Church. Seeing the great need and opportunity, Jessica and her close friends committed to planning short-term mission experiences. Their work grew into Commissioned By Christ, which was incorporated in the state of Virginia as a non-profit organization in 2008. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recognized CBC’s 501(c) 3 non-profit in March of 2009.
As a Catholic organization, CBC recognized the important of maintaining communion with the Universal and Local Church. It soon reached out to Bishop Paul S. Loverde for support, guidance, and permission to start working within the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Arlington. This provided an opportunity for CBC to lay a strong foundation for success. Through cooperation with the Diocese of Arlington, CBC developed its brand, policies, and safety protocols.
CBC organized its first mission trip to Banica in the Dominican Republic in July 2010. The officers and CBC’s Board of Directors worked with the Arlington Diocese to fulfill requirements and meet standards needed to receive the approval and blessing from Bishop Loverde. In the fall of 2011, The Most Rev. Paul S. Loverde, Bishop of the Diocese of Arlington granted CBC a nihil obstat to work within the Diocese. Over the past six years, Commissioned by Christ has organized an additional fifteen missions to international locations and several one-day missions in the Diocese of Arlington and the Archdiocese of Washington.
